The Mondello International Literary Prize is an award to which we are particularly attached. For many years, in fact, the award ceremonies were held right here by us, as if to underline the special link between this award and the place where it saw the light, 44 years ago, thanks to the initiative of a group of intellectuals. These people, led by Francesco Lentini, wanted to create a literary competition with an international value: it was the first time in Italy! For this reason, the jury has been selected – as it is today – among critics from all over Europe and the participating writers have always been of great stature. This is confirmed by the list of the winners, where we can read names like Günter Grass, John Maxwell Coetzee, Doris Lessing, Christa Wolf, Milan Kundera, Italo Calvino, Alberto Moravia and Herta Müller, the latter rewarded just this year, in the Foreign Author section.
A few years ago, the organization was handed over to the Fondazione Sicilia, in collaboration with the Fondazione Andrea Biondo and the Turin International Book Fair. The awards ceremony will take place next Friday, November 30th, at the Auditorium of the Sicilian Society for National History (Piazza San Domenico 2, at 5 pm). Prizes will be awarded to: Davide Enia with con Appunti per un naufragio (Sellerio), Michele Mari with Leggenda privata (Einaudi), Laura Pariani with Di ferro e d’acciaio (NNE), for the Italian Book section; Alberto Casadei with Biologia della letteratura (il Saggiatore), for the section Mondello Literary Criticism.
During the award ceremony the winners of the SuperMondello prize will be unveiled (selected among the three who have already won the Italian Book Award) and the Mondello Giovani prize, awarded by high school students from Sicily. Infos on the SITE www.premiomondello.it .
