European Museum Night is an event set this year on May 21. For one evening, visitors have access to a large number of museums, from one end of the continent to the other. Palermo also joins the initiative, a unique opportunity to enrich a pleasant evening stroll with the beauty and riches of the city.
Among the museums there’s the Gallery of Modern Art, a museum dedicated to painting and sculpture mainly dating back to the nineteenth century, with valuable works by Francesco Lojacono, Giuseppe Sciuti, Ettore de Maria Bergler and many more (Piazza Sant’Anna, free tours from 5:30pm to 12am – last admission at 11pm).
The Terradamare cooperative also have arranged some initiatives. So, with the young guides it will be possible to visit three sites, very different from each other but all equally interesting. Stanze al Genio is the name of an original private museum that was born from Pio Mellina’s passion for collecting. The core of the exhibition is the collection of thousands of majolica from different eras. One room after the other you can admire the colorful treasures that make up the richest collection of its kind in the world. Also there are old tin cans and bottles of ink, vintage toys, advertising labels and stationery items (Via Garibaldi 11, at 6pm – 12am).
The cooperative will open to the public also the Asmundo Palace, a large, elegant princely mansion just opposite the Cathedral of Palermo. The palace, with its beautiful frescoed halls, is noted mainly because there are exhibited various interesting collections: antique maps and weapons, china and much more (Via P. Novelli 3).
Finally, do not miss a visit to the Tower of San Nicolò (via N. Nasi 18) in the heart of the Albergheria district, the same that hosts the market Ballarò. From a height of 35 meters there is a splendid view over the roofs and domes of the city, even more impressive in the evening hours.
